Tivemos uma discussão animada, acima de tudo sobre a iniciativa franchise de reutilização (não reciclagem) para baterias de carros.
U. apontou que “onshore” as empresas podem obter espaços na Zona Franca do Caniçal, não com um imposto de 4%, mas com redução de impostos e melhores preços de eletricidade e água. O aluguer de um pavilhão com 250m2 é apenas por volta de 1750 euros por ano, e como eles não tem muitas empresas offshore, para preencher o espaço, onshores são bem-vindas, desde que eles trazem um plano de negócio e explicam como eles querem lidar com os seus resíduos. Insular está lá, por exemplo.

A Associação assume um taxa anual de apenas 20 euros, Se você entrar de outubro a dezembro, é apenas 10 euros (sem taxa inicial). D. tem uma ideia muito interessante para informar os clientes de uma forma informativa sobre a história da Madeira, que precisa um maior desenvolvimento e um contato específico da U.
O novo ponto de encontro foi devidamente testado e recebeu um eco muito positivo de David, Egbert e Gonçalo. (O estacionamento é gratuito, após 08:00). Tem uma área de estar confortável no andar de cima, perfeito para um grupo. Uma vez que você encontrou-o, vai gostar também ..

of all about the initiative to get a car battery re-use (not recycling) franchise going.
Ursula pointed out that “onshore” companies can also get spaces in the Free Trade Zone in Caniçal, not with 4% tax but with reduced taxes and better prices for electricity and water. The rent for a pavilion with 250m2 is only around 1750 Euro per YEAR, and as they don`t have enough offshore companies to fill the space, onshores are welcome, as long as they bring a business plan and lay out how they want to deal with their waste. Insular is there, for instance.
Info for the Agriculture group: www.agrobio.pt has only one member in Madeira at this time. The Association takes an annual fee of only 20 Euro, If you join from October to December, it is only 10 Euro (no upfront fee). David has a very interesting idea to inform clients in an informative way about Madeira’s history, it needs further development and a specific contact Ursula will try to get.
The new meeting place was duly tested and found a very positive echo from David, Egbert and Gonçalo. (Parking is free after 8pm). It has a comfortable sitting area upstairs, ideal for a group.

Olá equipe,
tivemos uma reunião produtiva, e temos um novo membro: Conceição,ela vai começar a produção de frangos orgânicos.
Nós esperávamos que David e Patricia nos traria sumo de pêra da colheita da semana passada, mas as pêras que não eram muito boas. Mas não se preocupe: David vai transformar o suco em uma bebida agradável efervescente que ele vai apresentar-nos o mais rápido possível. Pêras também podem ser transformado em um bom vinagre.
Agricultura:
Ursula distribuí alguns exemplares do relatório agrícola pela AHK (Câmara de Comércio bilateral). Eles promovem a Agrobio, uma cooperativa, que por uma pequena jóia, oferece aos agricultores um bom apoio e até mesmo um rótulo para a exportação de alimentos orgânicos.
Ursula falou sobre os contactos em curso com os compradores na Alemanha.
No que diz respeito à exportação através de um serviço de correio (pode ser bom para ervas secas e pó de abacate), o Parcel2Go só importa para Portugal, não exporta. Mas haverá outras opções com a FedEx, DHL e CTT. Em qualquer caso, a fim de obter bons preços, é necessário abrir uma conta com eles e enviar regularmente, também dão melhores preços para as empresas.
Regina salientou que, se um de nós queria transformar a produção com outros arbustos e árvores, o tempo para plantá-los seria em outubro / novembro; por flores, a época do plantio não é crítica.
Negócios em geral:
Gaynor & Ray apresentavam seu sabonete natural de menta – muito bom – , produzido em um processo de frio para que os ingredientes não estão danificados.
Turismo:
Rita está trabalhando em novas lembranças para os turistas, ela vai apresentá-los na próxima reunião.
A pedido de vários membros – a maioria de nós está longe de Funchal – Ursula fez uma pesquisa para um outro espaço para os nossos encontros, mais perto da Via Rápida.
O grupo terá agora reuniões separados para Agricultura e Turismo & Business, alternando a cada semana.Todos os membros receberão as atas das reuniões de ambos os grupos para que todos saibam o que está acontecendo.
Na próxima semana, teremos a primeira reunião Turismo & Negócios, no novo local. Como a Ursula será de férias por duas semanas, a próxima reunião dp grupo da Agricultura será em 04 de outubro.

Hello Team,we had a productive meeting, and we have a new member, Conceição, who will be starting a production of organic chickens.
We had hoped that David and Patricia would bring us pear juice from last week’s harvest but the pears weren’t very good. But do not fret: David is not trying to turn the juice into a nice fizzy drink which he will present to us as soon as possible. Pears can also be turned into an good vinegar.
Agriculture:
Ursula distributed some copies of the agricultural report by the AHK (bilateral chamber of commerce). They promote AgroBio, a cooperative which for a small fee, offers farmers a good support and even a label for export of organic food.
In regards to export via a courier service (could be good for dried herbs and avocado powder), Parcel2Go imports only to Portugal, they do not export. But there will be other options with FedEx , CTT and DHL. In any case, in order to get good prices, it is necessary to open an account with them and send regularly, also they give better prices to companies.
Regina pointed out that if one of us wanted to turn production with other bushes and trees, the time to plant them would be in October/November; for flowers, the time of planting is not that critical.
Business In General:
Gaynor & Ray presented their very nice natural mint soap, produced in a cold process so the ingredients are not damaged.
Tourism:
Rita is working on new souvenirs for the tourists, she will present them at the next meeting.
On request of several members – most of us are far away from Funchal – Ursula looked for another space for our meetings, closer to the Via Rapida.
The group will now have alternating Agriculture and Tourism & Business meetings every week. All members will receive the meeting minutes of both groups so everybody knows what is going on.
Next week, we shall have the first separate Tourism & Business Meeting, in the new place.
Pear harvest, people!

Part of the team followed Patricia’s and David’s request to help with the pear harvest last weekend on their farm in Esperdegarda – great fun!!
We worked about three hours and harvested around 500 kg off some slender, not-too-high trees.
The group was rewarded with a nice lunch, and if we hadn’t torn ourselves away, we’d have stayed forever to taste not only a delicious pear juice but also other liquid goodies with alcohol.
Afterwards, we visited Regina’s farm for a bit as it is located below Esperdegarda. Regina grows three kinds of sugar cane and a few nice herbs. She produces Basil & Olive oil (or sunflower oil) as basis for Pesto and soups, very tasty!!

Tivemos uma troca interessante, também com alguns novos membros.
Nós provamos um azeite espanhol, misturado com limão. Este é um exemplo de um produto, vem em garrafas pequenas, uma boa lembrança, e é vendido, junto com muitos outros óleos, no internet.
Esmeralda nos trouxe folhas de estévia, a substituição de açúcar entrar em moda no momento.
Agricultura:
Ursula informou sobre os contatos com duas empresas alemãs que são de interesse em plantas aromáticas secas e fibras para produtos de plástico.
Um membro destacou que a maior vantagem que os espanhóis têm mais de Portugal é que eles sabem como distribuir bens. Eles podem ter frutos de baixa qualidade, mas são muito bons em vender tem toda a Europa.
Parte do grupo visitou o lugar estufa de Nelson no sábado. Foi uma troca muito interessante e um boa experiência! Nós aprendemos sobre a sua maneira de compostagem e como construir paredes de flores, e encontramos uma infinidade de sementes, frutos e plantas.
Negócio em Geral:
Devemos explorar os básicos dos projectos do Gonçalo: para ver os problemas e como podemos superá-los.
Temos de discutir o cambio tempo / crédito. Poderiamos testar esse intercâmbio dentro do grupo, e depois aumentá-la.
O grupo já atingiu um bom tamanho, temos uma lista de membros ativos do grupo e também alguns adeptos, que devido a uma série de viagens, não podem participar frequentemente nas reuniões, mas podem ser chamados a ajuda quando se trata de investimentos e impostos,
Portanto, falávamos sobre a necessidade de formar uma entidade, para ser capaz de ir a público com nossas idéias e apresentar um rosto adequado ao público.
A partir de outubro, vamos dividir os grupos em dois: O grupo Agricultura continuará nàs quintas-feiras, e o Negócio em Geral e grupo de Turismo vai reunir-se em outro momento. Desta forma, cada grupo pode se concentrar melhor em sua área

We had an interesting exchange, also with some new members.
We tasted Spanish olive oil, pressed together with lemon. This is an example of a good product, it comes in small bottles, good as a souvenir, and is sold, together with many other oils, sold on the internet.
Esmeralda brought us Stevia leaves to taste, the sugar replacement coming into fashion at the moment.
Agriculture:
Ursula reported on the contacts with two German companies who are interest in dried aromatic herbs and fibers for plastic products.
Dennis pointed out that the biggest advantage the Spaniards have over Portugal is that they know how to distribute goods. They may have low quality fruit but they are very good at selling all over Europe
Part of the group visited Nelson’s hothouse place on Saturday. It was a very interesting exchange and experience! We learned about his way of composting and how to build flower walls, and we encountered a multitude of seeds, fruits and plants.
Business In General:
We should explore the basics for Gonçalo`s projects to see where the problems lie and how we can overcome them.
We need to discuss the time/credit exchange. We could test such an exchange within the group, and then enlarge it.
Upcoming changes in the structure:
The group now has reached a good size, we have a list of active group members and also some adherents who due to a lot of travel, cannot participate often in the meetings but can be called upon to help when it comes to investment and taxes,
As of October, we shall split the groups in two: The Agriculture group will continue to meet on Thursdays, and the Business in General & Tourism group will meet at another time. This way, each group can focus better on its area.

Na próxima semana temos a nossa próxima reunião, não posso esperar!
Algumas das empresas farmacêuticas que contactei na Alemanha responderam ao meu e-mail e estão dispostos a analisar amostras de plantas. Mas o maior KICK é que um deles está à procura de fibras fortes para a produção de peças especiais industriais, e parece que folhas de bananeira e restos de cana de azúcar podem fazer o truque. Exigências muito específicas têm de ser cumpridos, e a qualidade deve ficar consistente. Isto significa que não podemos apenas enviar-lhes qualquer coisa que encontra-se pelo caminho-. As plantas devem ser cultivadas sob condições controladas – ok, podemos!!

Some of the pharmaceutical companies I contacted in Germany answered my introduction email and are willing to look at plant samples. But the biggest kick is that one of them is looking for strong fibers for the production of special industrial parts, and it seems that banana leaves and sugarcane leftovers might do the trick. Very specific requirements have to be met, and the quality must stay be consistent. This means that we cannot just send them anything we find by the wayside; the plants must be grown under controlled conditions – can do!

Agricultura:
Ursula contactou várias empresas alemãs que estão comprando plantas para fins medicinais e deu um relatório sobre este projecto
Turismo:
Ursula deu um relatorio sobre o projecto dos casamentos para estrangeiros na Madeira. Ao contrário do Funchal, o notário de S. Cruz está preparada para chegar aos hotéis (neste caso, a Quinta Splendida), para realizar cerimônias, em instalacoes que são muito mais agradável do que no escritório do registrador.
Esta será uma ideia aberta, ela precisa muito apoio e muitas empresas a atingir a massa crítica para ter um impacto positivo bre a economia. Uma vez que o processo for concluído, ursula vai einviar a informacao em conjunto para os hotéis, os operadores turísticos (e do Diario de Noticias) por e-mail. Eles deveriam, então, desenvolver e promover este potencial pacotes para os turistas. Isso também pode levar algumas pessoas para iniciar o respectivo negócio de”Wedding Planner”; dois sites já existem para a Madeira, mas apenas em Português.
Negocio em Geral:
David falou sobre os recentes incêndios, e que as pessoas precisam ser incentivados a limpar a fitera e o espinheiro, para evitar incêndios no futuro.
Regina mencionou que o óleo da cozinha usada pode ser usado para produzir glicerina e depois sabão, esta seria uma actividade para dar bom lucro.
Nós falamos sobre produção de aguardente em casa, mas isso é proibido, cerveja e licores podem ser produzidos em casa. David disse que a produção de sidra é demasiado exigente tecnicamente.
Gonçalo trouxe algumas informações para Egberto sobre o processo de licenciamento industrial.
Remi disse que a água mineral da Madeira podia ser um bom produto, e com o nome “Madeira”, podia obter exclusividade e ser altamente comercializável. A Água “Atlântida” já é sucesso no mercado.
Ursula trouxe a idéia de uma moeda local. No pior cenário, Portugal poderá ter de abandonar o euro e reverter para um escudo de menor valor. Dentro do país, este valor menor não importa, mas, ainda assim, as pessoas podem preferir ter um outro meio de pagamento de bens e serviços entre si.
Egberto falou sobre outra forma de intercâmbio privado, o banco de tempo. Com base nas horas que ele trabalha para fazer o seu pão, ele já trocou o seu pão para as aulas de ioga e serviços semelhantes.

Agriculture:
Ursula contacted several German companies who are purchasing plants for medicinal purposes.
Tourism:
Ursula reported about the progress in the Marriages in Madeira project. Unlike in Funchal, the registrar of S. Cruz is prepared to come to the hotels (in this case, Quinta Splendida), to perform ceremonies so the surroundings are much nicer that in the registrar`s office.
This is an open idea, it needs much support and many businesses to reach critical mass and make an impact on the economy. Once the dossier is finished, it will be sent to the hotels, the tour operators (and the Diario de Noticias) by email. They should then develop packages and promote this potential to the tourists. This may also prompt some people to start the respective “Wedding Planner”business; two websites already exist for Madeira, but only in Portuguese.
Business in general:
David spoke about the recent fires, and that people need to be encouraged to clean out the bracken and the bramble to avoid fires in the future. Some systems could be an incentive for the population to clean out the brush and get paid for it.
Regina mentioned that used oil can be used to produce glycerine for soap, this would be a nice business, too.
We spoke about production of aguardente at home but this is forbidden, beer and liquors may be produced at home. David said that the production of Cider is too technically demanding.
Goncalo brought Egberto some info about the industrial license process,
Remi said that Madeira mineral water might be a good product, and with the name “Madeira” , it might gain good exclusivity and be highly marketable. Atlantida water is already successful in the market.
Ursula brought the idea of a local currency. In the worst case scenario, Portugal might have to leave the Euro and revert to a less valuable Escudo. Within the country, this lesser value wouldn’t matter but still, people might prefer to have another means of paying for goods and services between each other.

Tivemos uma troca interessante, também com alguns novos membros:
Esmeralda possui a Quintinha das Ervas em S. Martinho, ela vende ervas específicas para os Chefs locais de bons restaurantes e é muito bem versado na área de ervas.
Hilário e sua esposa Sonja juntavam-se a nós, Sr. Hilário é dono de uma empresa de construção civil em Camara de Lobos e tem um bom conhecimento do cenário de negócios na Madeira.
Egberto trabalha na Universidade, ele também produziu o excelente pão que provamos na última vez. Seu problema é um de muitas pessoas com uma produção pequena em casa: é caro e complicado de obter licenças para poder produzir mais e vender para fora. O pão de Egberto já encontrou fãs na Suíça.
Gonçalo trabalha na redução de ruído para as empresas e em outros projetos ecológicos.
Agricultura:
Ursula entregou uma lista de bons restaurantes que poderiam estar interessados em comprar produtos específicos para os seus menus. Os membros podem se juntar em um pequeno grupo para abordar os Chefs de cozinha e estabelecer os contatos.
Ursula entrou em contacto com os compradores estrangeiros de matérias-primas para a produção de medicamentos e suplementos alimentares, para ver se podemos estabelecer um serviço de fornecimento sob demanda para essas empresas.
Muitos indivíduos produzem compotas, marmeladas, licores e doces etc, e como eles não têm condições adequadas em suas casas, seus produtos não podem ser certificadas e vendidas (apenas em mercados de pulga) em maior quantidade. Nós discutimos a idéia de uma “fábrica” que poderia ter todas as licenças para a produção de uma variedade de produtos. A fábrica faria apenas alguns produtos licenciados.
Para fazer pão, há uma opção para adquirir uma licença industrial que é mais fácil de obter.

Ursula gostaria de começar um check-up para empresas novas e existentes. Muitas empresas não conseguem porque os proprietários são muito otimistas e abrem lojas sem planejamento adequado, empregados mal treinados e sem entusiasmo e em lugares errados. Isso precisa ser discutido mais adiante.

We had an interesting exchange, also with some new members:
Esmeralda owns the Quintinha das Ervas in S. Martinho, she sells specific herbs to the local Chefs of good restaurants and is very well versed in the area of herbs.
Hilario and his wife Sonja joined us, Sr. Hilario owns a construction company in Camara de Lobos and has good knowledge of the business scene in Madeira.
Egberto works at the University, he also bakes the great bread we tasted last time. His problem is one many people with small production share with him: it is costly and cumbersome to get licenses to be able to produce more and sell outside. Egberto`s bread already found fans in Switzerland.
Gonçalo works in noise reduction for enterprises and in other eco projects.
Agriculture:
Ursula delivered a list of good restaurants which could be interested to buy specific produce for their menus. The members could join in a small group to approach the Kitchen Chefs and establish the contacts.
Ursula shall contact foreign buyers of raw materials for the production of medicines and food supplements to see if we can establish an on-demand supply service to these companies.
Many individuals produce jams, marmalade, liqueur and sweets etc, and as they have no proper conditions in their homes, their products cannot be certified and sold (only on flea markets/cat boot sales) in greater quantity. We discussed the idea of a “factory” which could have all the licenses to produce a variety of products,. The factory would make only certain licensed products.
For bread baking, there is an option to acquire an industrial license which is easier to get.
Tourism:
We spoke about Marriage in Madeira, to be discussed further
Business in General:
Ursula would like to start a business check-up for new and existing companies. Many businesses do not succeed because the owners are too optimistic and open shops without proper planning, badly trained and unenthusiastic staff and in the wrong places. This needs to be discussed further.

Para a reunião da próxima semana, teremos um visitante – espero, também um novo membro – a partir de uma fazenda de ervas. A senhora tem bons contactos para os Chefes locais dos melhores restaurantes. Essas pessoas estão sempre em busca de bons ingredientes frescos para apimentar os menus.
Também encontrei alguns corretores para produtos vegetais – fito-farmacêuticos – para fins medicinais na Alemanha. Vou escrever para eles para obter a sua reacção ao nosso potencial desconhecido. Imagine: uma ilha inteira pode produzir bons produtos sob demanda! Basta dizer-nos o que você precisa, e nós vamos o produzir. Deve ser tentador!
Sumo de maracujá é caro, e Coral (“Brisa Maracujá”), bem como outros produtores de sumos de frutas estrangeiras precisam e querem. Podemos crescer muito deles!

For the meeting next week, we shall have a visitor – hopefully, also a new member – from a herb farm. The lady has good contacts to the local Chefs of the best restaurants. These people are always searching for good and fresh ingredients to spice up their menus.
I also found some brokers for plant products – phyto-pharmaceuticals – for medicinal purposes in Germany. I shall write to them to get their reaction to our unknown potential. Imagine: an entire island can produce nice products on demand! Just tell us what you need, and we’ll grow it for you. Should be tempting!
Maracuja juice (passion fruit) is expensive, and Coral (“Brisa Maracuja”) as well as foreign fruit juice producers need and want it. We can grow plenty of them!

Tivemos uma reunião animada, principalmente com o grupo de Agricultura, e com uma degustação de pão. O pão é feito por E. Moreira: ele compra o grão de agricultores orgânicos especiais, tritura-se, então é fermentado por 18 horas. O pão é livre de glúten, com frutas e / ou nozes, muito caro, mas bom. Seu problema: é feito em sua cozinha dele (muito limpo), assim não pode obter certificações. Se não estava lá na quinta-feira e não podia pegar um pedaço: é para venda em BioLogos. Há muitas pessoas que estão produzindo pão da casa e marmelada etc que não pode ser vendido de forma profissional, porque eles não tem condições de obter certificados para os seus produtos. Vamos trabalhar nisso.

We had a lively exchange, mainly in the Agriculture group, with a bread tasting. The bread is made by E. Moreira: he buys the organic grain from special farmers, grinds it himself, then it is leavened for 18 hours. The bread is gluten-free, with fruits and/or nuts, very expensive but good. His problem: it’s made in his (very clean) kitchen and he cannot get certifications:it’s for sale in Biologos.
There are many people who are producing home made bread and jam etc. and who cannot sell on a professional basis because they don`t have the conditions to get their products certified. We shall work on this.

Escrevi para 13 corretores de alimentos para descobrir que tipo de frutos secos, plantas e sementes a Madeira poderia vender lá fora, mas não obteve nenhuma resposta ainda – a maioria dos meus e-mails provavelmente acabou em um filtro de SPAM. Vai chamar alguns deles na próxima semana. Eu também encontrei uma lista de bons fornecedores – estes poderiam ser os nossos clientes – para um supermercado orgânico na Alemanha, onde eu costumava comprar.
Primeiro, precisamos entender como essas pessoas pensam, e se conseguirmos de formar uma relação com um ou dois, temos uma boa chance de melhorar nossas exportações. Temos que começar por algum lado!

I wrote to 13 food brokers to find out what kind of dried fruits, plants and seeds Madeira could sell out there but didn’t get any answers yet – most of my emails probably ended up in a SPAM filter. Will call some of them next week. I also found a good suppliers list – these could be our clients- for an organic supermarket in Germany where I used to buy from.
First we need to understand how these people tick, and if we get one or two onboard, we have a good chance to improve our exports. One has to start somewhere!
