Olá equipe,

Tivemos uma reunião muito interessante com Miguel Cardoso de MadeBiotech e NaturExtracts

Ele nos deu uma visão sobre o que ele está fazendo com as duas empresas.

MadeBioTech é a empresa R & D biotecnológica, NatureExtracts o produtor e vendedor dos produtos resultantes. Miguel tem um PhD em química, bem como outras qualificações.

Ele acha que a Madeira é ideal para o desenvolvimento por causa do Laurissilva e da Biosfera em Santana que pode ajudar para produzir extratos orgânicos (óleos, pós) com alta qualidade.

Ele tem vários projetos de pesquisa. Um deles é a utilização de plantas endémicas específicas em plantações (não em estufas), para produzir extractos medicinais. Ele é contra a importação de plantas estrangeiras, e aposta em espécies endêmicas.

Sua empresa está em processo de mapeamento da Islândia. Se nós dar-lhe os dados do GPS de um terreno qualquer, ele pode nos informar que melhor as plantas podem ser cultivadas na terra, e quanto ele pagaria pelo produto.

Ursula disse-lhe que o nosso grupo tem cerca de 60 hectares de cultivo, mas nem tudo é orgânico. Ursula irá enviar-lhe a lista antiga (informação ainda não fornecido pelo grupo de Filipe !) sobre os terrenos e os produtos que os membros estão cultivando neste momento.

Ele diz que existe agora mais demanda por produtos saudáveis, e estudos têm mostrado que os consumidores estão dispostos a pagar por isso. L’ Oréal já realizou estudos sobre a ilha há algum tempo.

Miguel diz que a indústria farmacêutica está tentando controlar o mercado de plantas medicinais (como vimos antes, semelhante a Monsanto com os alimentos GM). Eles querem patentear produtos sintéticos, depois pressionarmos os legisladores para empurrar os produtos naturais fora do mercado com os direitos de patente. Em resposta, os Governos do Brasil e da Índia aumentaram as barreiras para as empresas estrangeiras para realizar estudos nas florestas, por fim de prever o roubo de Know-How e manter seus produtos naturais intactos.

MadeBiotech não vai competir com a indústria farmacêutica, plantas endémicas são o caminho certo a seguir. Miguel diz que encontrou uma boa cooperação das pessoas da Biosfera em Santana, e tem esperança que da Biosfera pode ser ampliado para outros conselhos.

MadeBiotech e NaturExtracts teem o equipamento necessário para a produção de óleos essenciais. Eles podem processar grandes quantidades e não estão interessados em pequenos lotes. Alecrim, limão e lavanda são interessantes para a produção de óleo. Miguel também tem um liofilizador para produzir pós (por exemplo, de abacate).

Miguel vai importar micro-algas (a partir do Algarve, ilhas Canárias e em outros lugares secos, onde o terreno é barato) que vai usar para produzir beta-caroteno. O corpo precisa dele para produzir vitamina A. Estudos encontraram que os ingredientes sintéticos causan cancro. Por isso a indústria de alimentos tem que substituir o produto sintético com um produto natural.

Funcho também é interessante para ele, até mesmo as plantas silvestres (toda a planta). O funcho é transformado em óleo para velas que são bons contra os mosquitos da dengue. Sra. Teztner também pergunto para as sementes, provavelmente para a produção de óleo.

Então, falamos sobre as necessidades de energia da fábrica de Miguel. Ele se recusou utlilzar vapor feita a partir de gasolina, ele quer usar a sua própria biomassa (algas). David propôs os tijolos de fiteira e fiteira seria ok, mas Miguel poderia usar apenas pelotas para este forno. Miguel dará David as especificações necessárias e um preço justo que pode pagar,

Gonçalo disse que há uma praga matando repolhos em Porta da Cruz, mas o governo não está investigando ainda.

Falamos sobre a futura escassez do fósforo e a possibilidade de adicionar um fungo ao solo que ajuda as plantas ganhar até 85% do mineral para o crescimento, em contraste com o habitual 15% (veja a palestra na Http / TED http://www.ted.com / palestras / mohamed_hijri_a_simple_solution_to_the_coming_phosphorus_crisis.html )

Rodrigo mencionou que a melhor fonte de fósforo é a urina humana.

Falamos um pouco sobre o Ferry, que foi muito bom para o seu negócio e a esperança para obter uma nova ligação para a ilha.

O MELHOR: leite de burros da um ganho em torno de € 1,000 / litro (ou um kg de pó). Nós temos seis burros (machos e fêmeas ) na floresta laurissilva. Ursula falou com o Diario de novo, agora alguém outro é responsável por decidir quando e como vão publicar o nosso Manual de Proteção contra Incêndios.

Da Vinci: Ursula precisa encontrar um novo contato para um investidor como os outros contatos cairam. Egberto vai falar com uma pessoa da família Blandy para ver se eles estão interessados em investir em uma nova atração turística para a ilha. Pestana não está investindo na Madeira.

Ignite Portugal:

Ursula quer apresentar nossa solução híbrida (compra de uma casa sem hipoteca) na próxima IGNITE Portugal em 16 de novembro (Sexta-feira) na Universidade (Reitoria) a partir das 17 h. Como não temos reunião na Quinta-feira seria bom de alguns membros da equipe poderiam vir!

Hello Team,

We had a very interesting meeting with Miguel Cardoso from MadeBioTech and NaturExtracts

He gave us an overview of what he is doing with the two companies.

MadeBioTech is the R & D company, NatureExtracts the producer and seller of the resulting products. Miguel has a PhD in chemistry as well as other qualifications.

He thinks that Madeira is ideal for development because the Laurissilva and the Biosphere in Santana can help produce organic extracts (oils, powders) with high quality.

He has several research projects. One of them is to use specific endemic plants in plantations (not in greenhouses), to produce medicinal extracts. He is against importing foreign plants, and bets on endemic species.

His company is in the process of mapping the island. If we give him the GPS data of a piece of land, he can inform us which plants can be best grown on the land, and what he would pay for the product.

Ursula told him that altogether, our group has around 60 HA under cultivation but not everything is organic. Ursula will send him the old list (information not yet provided by Filipe’s people!!!) of products the members are cultivating a this time.

He says that there is now more demand for healthy products, and studies have shown that consumers are prepared to pay for it. L’Oréal has conducted plant studies on the island some time ago.

Miguel says that the pharmaceutical industry is trying to the get market of medicinal plants under control (as we have seen before, similar to Monsanto with GM foods). They want to patent synthetic products, then they lobby the legislators to push the natural products off the market with patent rights. As a response, the governments of Brazil and India increased the barriers for foreign companies to conduct studies in the forests in order to prevent the theft of knowledge and keep their natural products intact.

MadeBioTech is not going to compete with the pharma industry, endemic plants are the right way to go. Miguel says he found good co-operation from the Biosphere people in Santana, and it is hoped that the Biosphere can be widened to other Districts.

MadeBioTech and NaturExtracts have the necessary equipment to produce essential oils – they can process large quantities and are not interested in too small lots. Rosemary, Lemons and Lavender are interesting for oil production. Miguel also has a liofilizador to produce powders (for example, from Avocados).

Miguel is importing micro-algas (from the Algarve, the Canary islands and other dry places where land is cheap) which he uses to produce beta-carotin. The body needs it to produce Vitamin A. Studies found that the ingredients of synthetic Beta-Carotin causes cancer, so the food industry has to replace the synthetic product with a natural one.

Funcho is also interesting to him, even the wild plants (the whole plant). Fennel is turned into oil for candles which are good against the Dengue mosquitoes. Mrs. Teztner was asking fennel seeds, probably also for oil production.

We also spoke about the energy needs of Miguel’s factory. He declined to by locally produces steam made from diesel, he will use his own biomass (algae). David proposed the fiteira bricks, and fiteira would be ok, but Miguel could only use pellets for this oven. Miguel will give David the specifications and price needed,

Gonçalo said that there is a pest killing cabbages in Porta da Cruz but the Government is not investigating it yet.

We spoke about the coming Phosphorous shortage and the possibility to add a fungus tho the soil which will help the plants gain up to 85% of the mineral for growth, in contrast to the usual 15% (see the TED talk at http://www.ted.com/talks/mohamed_hijri_a_simple_solution_to_the_coming_phosphorus_crisis.html )

Rodrigo mentioned that the best source for phosphorous is human urine.

We spoke a bit about the ferry, which was very good for his business, and the changes to get a new ferry connection for the island.

 The ultimate kicker: Donkey milk fetches around 1000€/lt (or one kg of powder). Uwe will have a meeting on Nov 12 with the wholesaler Martin Bauer, to discuss what the lab results for our samples (Melissa, Menta Macela)

Ursula is still on touch with Mrs. Teztner, about the banana fiber project (Cavalinha will not go ahead)

Rodrigo found another offer for a mushroom course in November, this one is much less expensive than the one from AJAMPS, please see info enclosed

Ursula spoke to the Diario again, now somebody else is in charge to decide when and how they will publish the Fire Protection and Combat Manual.

Da Vinci: Ursula needs to find a new contact for an investor as the other contacts have fallen through . Egberto will speak to a person in the Blandy Family to see if they are interested at all in investing in a new tourist attraction for the island. Pestana is not investing in Madeira.

IGNITE Portugal:

Ursula will present our Hybrid solution (purchase of a house without mortgage) in the next IGNITE Meeting on Nov 16. It would be nice of some team members could come
