We met in the Gallery and saw this video:

Steve Huffman is a manager of Reddit https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reddit and from K.:

This is not a typical social media website, it is a place for building communities for all kinds of topics.I t was founded in 2005, and had its ups and downs. “Likes” and “followers” are not the issue. People who contribute useful posts may get “good Karma” The site is moderated, Hate posts and bad stuff is eliminated.

The site is indented for people who feel alone, they can connect to like-minded people with the same hobbies or concerns. Each Reddit community sets its own policies. It is supposed to promote a human internet.

The speaker said that Social Media sets a stage where a person needs to “perform” well to receive Likes, resulting in competition between humans for attention. Ai on top, turns these Social Media places into factories for “Slop”.

Reddit is functioning like a neighbourhood in a city. Nobody gets to be famous on Reddit. Reddit has the values each community sets up as guidelines. “Be civil” is often one of them. Reddit is anonymous. It does not allow hate speech and other awful stuff.. Communities are diverse, like “Mom for a Minute” where people who need a positive moment can meet with “Moms” who give them positive encouragement. There is also a community for bald people, and a wide variety of others. Reddit stands for tough love.

Ome examples of communities ( list form Wikipedia):

r/AmItheAsshole – Reddit forum for judgement of behavior r/anime – Anime community on Reddit r/antiwork – Subreddit associated with the anti-work movement r/Art – Art internet forum r/AskHistorians – History forum on Reddit r/AskReddit – Subreddit providing a forum for users to ask questions r/bald – Subreddit about baldness and hair loss r/BreadStapledToTrees – Humorous subreddit where users staple bread to trees r/changemyview – Subreddit dedicated to presenting opposing viewpointsr/dataisbeautiful – Subreddit focused on data visualization r/The_Donald – Banned Donald Trump-supporting subreddit r/Feminism – Feminist subreddit r/HaveWeMet – Reddit roleplay community r/IAmA – Reddit forum for question-and-answer interactive interviews r/malefashionadvice – Subreddit for men seeking fashion advice r/place – Online social experiment on Reddit r/science – Science subreddit r/wallstreetbets – Subreddit for stock and option trading

Our feeling was that it can be a “blabla” website, but human interaction always starts with banalities (The weather, how are you?).

Reddit has limited advertising and is financed by donations (like Wikipedia) It also still has income from a deal with Google etc, to allow them to use the Reddit content for the teaching of AI: This is set to run out in 2027.

Influencers are not here because they cannot generate followers.

We also spoke about AI and its dangers. Circular accounting between the AI giants is helping to blow up the financial bubble. It might burst soon, and the repercussions will be hitting Europe as well. Social Media are superfluous, and humankind is waking up to it now.

We met in the Gallery and saw this video:

What AI can’t do—and why you can | Svetlana Makarova

Svetlana lists five human margins that AI cannot ever have or replace: Humans have

  • Experiences
  • Inspiration for dreams
  • Social Acuity and reading
  • Emotional Courage
  • Imagination and memories

We were not sure if the speaker is not too optimistic. Humans have to use their brains. The brain is like a muscle. It needs to be used and challenged to stay up to speed. Social Media and ChatGPT etc. change that.

C. said that AI cannot produce real art. It may be able to reproduce it but such art does not transport emotions. The AI “product” may, however, cause resonance in the viewer. The Rolling Stones made a new album, and for the respective video, AI was used to make them look younger. This has also been applied in some movies. (ABBA).

A talk show host in Germany said that that young people can, based on certain formulations (comparisons for example) discern the use of AI in a text Older folks may not be able to see this. Software to detect AI use in texts is also available today.

We used to be upset if a politician was found out to have copied text from other works for their doctorate. Now AI is a lot more involved and hard to discern.

A newspaper A in Germany accepted a guest article from a scientist. It was found to be written with the use of AI. The editors decided to not accept such pieces in the future. Then the boss of Newspaper B wrote an excellent response, defending AI, and at the bottom, mentioned that this nice piece of journalism had been written with the help of AI: AI cannot be discerned easily.

AI will invent answers if it cannot find one in its database. AI developers can set the rule that AI must not invent anything in a response. In that case, it has to abide by it.

AI logarithms are so vast by now that, once AI gives an answer, no human being, not even another AI, can follow the logical chain the answer is based on. Meaning: Even if regulation were still possible, no AI product can be trusted to give proper information, let alone guidance.

Elections were manipulated in New York, as was Brexit (by Russia). AI is a tool here but the guilt lies with humans who apply it for bad motives. In these cases, money is applied to manipulate public opinion. Money always wins.

China is limiting money contributions to politicians. Other countries may follow suit to avoid that money “buys” an election.

The Social Media limit for children is very important because with the progress of AI, children may lose the ability to think for themselves, and to really properly acquire knowledge.

Resistance is growing toward AI because people come to understand that AI uses massive amounts of electricity and water in their area, without giving them jobs or good value for the money.

We as individuals have the choice to pick our news sources. We can pay for a renowned newspaper and deliberately ignore the fluff Social Media try to push under our noses. In medicine, AI is good as diagnostic tool, often doing a better job than human beings, but nothing else.

There is an AI race on between China and the US, and both sides believe they cannot stop or limit their AI, in order not to lose against the other country.

And anything we humans can think of, can be put into reality. The Neanderthal people would not have known what to make of an air plane. We can think of robots which can be turned into warriors (The Lord of the Rings), then this can become a reality.

We couldn’t come up with a last positive thought so we went for dinner!

We met in the Gallery and saw a Guardian video about “Artificial General Intelligence:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/video/2023/nov/02/ilya-the-ai-scientist-shaping-the-world

The interviewed person, Ilya Sutskever, is one of the creators of AI.

He said that false messages and fraudulent content will become much more common.

BBC had to retract a news item because it was based it on a fake new item from the AI-based “Apple Intelligence” blog:

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/01/08/apple-ai-fake-news-alerts-highlight-the-techs-misinformation-problem.html

Ilya had a good analogy: what if AGI will treat us like we are treating animals, even pets? Would we be ok with it? Humans may become insignificant.

On the other hand, humans do not need to have AI to mistreat other humans. One reason why Greenlanders don’t like the Danes is that decades ago, island school girls were fitted with UID devices to keep them from getting pregnant. The population of Greenland has therefore not grown on a normal level.

The question came up: Will AGI be dealing like a human being, will it have empathy, and will that be a kind of empathy that humans have? Can it produce life?

Terry Pratchett (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Pratchett) wrote about the problem of AI morals in this books decades ago

The paper clip story shows how AI can get out of bounds:

https://cepr.org/voxeu/columns/ai-and-paperclip-problem

Apparently, AI has already killed people, https://123top.ai/has-ai-killed-people/

The American military is certainly doing a lot of research to use AI and AGI for their purposes. People like Trump and Musk are promoting these technologies.

In engineering and medicine, AI is a useful tool to aid humanity.

More and more, robots will aid humans (in the airport of Stockholm, C. had the first experience), even if in the beginning, humans have to spend a lot of time supervising tasks.

AI is getting better. Google Translate (Deepl is also good) has improved its translation tool recently.

AI and AGI development is decentralized, nobody has it under control. In the end, it will be used to make money for some, and not for others.

Humans have to learn to distrust any message or SMS (No, Brad Pitt is NOT interested in you!)

AGI development (opening Pandora’s box) will be directed to become more “human” by its creators, on one hand,to help, but in the hand of the wrong people, it will be used to manipulate the masses.

What about resistance to this development?

Older people (like us) complain about things that do not work, we are thinking of how we can defend ourselves against evil AI. Youngsters try to set up things via an App, and if it does not work, they simply abandon the effort. Bureaucracy might bite them in the behind later…

The outlook is not good, Wars seem to increase (warlike conflicts have actually decreased), and people like Trump come into power. The antidote will be our growing knowledge that we are one village and that we need to stick together, to deflect attempts to divide humanity.

Note: look how much information Ursula obtained for this report by simply looking it up on the internet…
